Eximbank India supports rehabilitation of the differently-abled people

The Export-Import Bank of India (Exim India) has been traditionally contributing towards strengthening India’s economic and commercial ties with other countries through its major financing products, but now it is making an endeavor to be more closely associated with other segments in the multi-layered developmental process of partner countries to support social dimensions like health and education.

Towards this new endeavor, Exim India is extending its support by providing a grant of USD100,000 to BMVSS for setting up the Jaipur Foot Center in Kabul, Afghanistan. The BMVSS is the largest organization of its kind for the rehabilitation of the disabled and the parent body of the Jaipur Foot Limb, the most widely used artificial foot/limb in the world. This project positively impacted 1,000 lives.

The Bank’s USD100,000 grant support is being used to defray the cost of materials and components for fitting 1000 artificial limbs in a year at the Jaipur Foot Centre. This will help empowering the differently abled and restoring their economic capabilities. In addition, a support of USD25,000 was provided for training three (3) Kabul’s National Disability Institute (NDI) technicians in Jaipur for a period of three (3) months.

This project is also expected to have multi-faceted impact on the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN) because disability is referred in several sections of the SDGs, especially those relating to education, growth, and employment, inequality, and accessibility of human settlements. It also serves as an encouragement in the development and transfer of innovative technologies from developing countries, considering its low cost, only USD50 worth ultramodern prosthetic fitted by BMVSS compared to a similar USD12,000 limbs produced in the USA.

Exim India’s “Jaipur Foot Centre” project won the 2017 ADFIAP Outstanding Development Project Award, under the Corporate Social Responsibility category.
