The 2nd Global Sustainable Finance Conference (GSFC), co-organized by ADFIAP and E-Tech Germany under the Global Sustainable Finance Network (GSFN) initiative, was highly successful with 52 participants from 20 countries around the world attending and presenting their best practices on sustainable development and finance as well as discussing the results of the Rio+20 Summit on Sustainable Development . The event held on July 5-6, 2012 in Karlsruhe, Germany was supported by the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), the World Federation of Development Finance Institutions (WFDFI) and the city government of Karlsruhe.
The conference covered, among others, such topics as the green economy, carbon bond, capacity-building for clean technologies, success stories for embedding sustainability in financial institutions, forest investment for sustainability, impact investing for social good, green insurance, wind energy finance and sustainable buildings. Apart from knowledge sharing and deliberating on green finance and on the steps DFIs can take to support the envisioned transition to low carbon and sustainable economy, the forum also helped establish partnerships and in developing synergies through excellent networking opportunities among senior members of the financial community, multilateral agencies, governmental institutions, academia, sustainable and environmental management practitioners, and other stakeholders worldwide.
The event was also an occasion to launch the Global Sustainable Finance Awards at the Karlsruhe City Hall to recognize and honor institutions under three categories, namely, best innovation on sustainable financial products and services, outstanding sustainable project financing and outstanding business sustainability achievement. Nominations for the awards will start on August 1, 2012 and winning entries will be honored during a special event at next year’s GSFC 3 on July 4-5, 2013 in Karlsruhe, Germany.
