ADFIAP, through its Asia-Pacific Institute of Development Finance (IDF), welcomed the second successive batch of participants for a study tour program (STP) in the Philippines for its member, Regional Development Bank (RDB) of Sri Lanka. The group was composed of 40 officers and staff who, from June 19-23, 2018, visited and observed firsthand the activities, projects, and best practices of Philippine-based ADFIAP members and partner-organizations.
ADFIAP Secretary General Octavio B. Peralta welcomed the delegates and subsequently presented a general overview of development banking while Deputy Secretary General Norman A. Tilos made a presentation on fintech opportunities for MSMEs within the agricultural value chain. The subsequent sessions of the STP included institutional visits to the U.N.’s Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Land Bank of the Philippines, and Card Bank, Inc.
At FAO, the delegates were briefed on the organization’s country programming framework as well as its key initiatives on food security and nutrition, agri production, sustainable management of resources, and the increasing agri sector resilience to natural and human-induced shocks. The Land Bank visit provided the delegates with the Bank’s innovative agricultural value chain financing scheme for farmer, fishermen, and entrepreneurs; financial instruments to support agricultural value chain financing; as well as strategies utilized to manage risks in agricultural finance. At Card Bank Inc., a brief presentation on its microfinance operation was made, followed by project visits in two of its successful clients.
