The “Green Energy Program (GEP) for Rural Communities” project of the Alalay Sa Kaunlaran, Inc. (ASKI) has proven to be an effective way in addressing environmental concerns of rural communities in the provinces of Luzon in Northern Philippines. The GEP is part of ASKI’s energy inclusion initiative designed to help address environmental concerns by promoting solar-powered lamps, solar water pump for farmers, and bio-gas for hog raisers.
The program, which has been getting positive responses from the communities, is also aimed at improving the socio-economic status of marginalized sectors and individuals through the responsible, efficient and effective use of energy; increasing productive use of renewable energy by farmers, fisher folks and livestock hog raiser; and increasing awareness and knowledge of technology and their corresponding cost and benefits for domestic and livelihood.
Todate, GEP has been serving 829 clients with 840 products disbursed and a total loan amount of Php 3, 819, 995.00. It continuously provide and support the electricity needs of ASKI clients, especially in areas with limited source of electricity.
ASKI’s “Green Energy Program for Rural Communities” received a Merit Awards in the 2018 ADFIAP Outstanding Development Project Awards under the environmental development category.
