ADFIAP and the Australian APEC Study Centre at RMIT University in Melbourne, with the support of the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) have successfully held the “Regional Symposium on Best Practice Regulatory Principles Supporting MSME (micro, small and medium enterprises) Access to Finance” on June 27-28, 2011 at the Dusit Thani Hotel, in Makati City, Philippines.

The event brought together 32 delegates and experts representing financial system policy makers and regulatory officials from the region, specialists from international and regional organizations and standard setting bodies and senior representatives of development, savings and commercial banks as well as from the securities sector and non-bank financial intermediaries.

The delegates discussed and dissected various issues affecting MSME access to finance in the nine sessions scheduled during the event. The thorough discussions resulted in the crafting of ideas and proposed principles which will be submitted for consideration by APEC Finance Ministries to further enhance best practice regulatory approaches for the sector. These proposals would also be used as the bases for a subsequent five-day capacity building training program for regional policy-makers and regulators to be held in Melbourne, Australia in February 2012.

The symposium was inaugurated by Deputy Governor Nestor A. Espenilla of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (Central Bank of the Philippines), Mr. Ken Waller, Director of the Australian APEC Study Center and Mr. Octavio B. Peralta, ADFIAP Secretary General.
