ADFIAP, PHILCESS to collaborate on environmental training courses

ADFIAP, represented by the ADFIAP Consulting Group Head, Ms. Cora D. Conde, and the Head of Projects and Programs, Ms. Arlene S. Orencia, met with officials of the Philippine Learning Center for Environment and Social Sustainability (PHILCESS) led by Dr. Aura Matias, Director, at the University of the Philippines-National Engineering Center (UP-NEC) in Quezon City on June 29, 2018. ADFIAP and PHILCESS discussed potential collaboration in the conduct of environment-related technical training programs.

The collaboration with PHILCESS will enable ADFIAP to align its training programs with current trends that would empower its member-institutions to address critical issues such as environmental and social risk management through training courses on environmental assessment (EA) and EA tools as well as on project supervision, environmental and social management.

A critical phase in the preparation and implementation of investment projects is the assessment of their environmental and social impacts to help ensure that they are within generally-accepted standards. The environmental and social assessments are essential decision-making tools for financial institutions as well as for national and local authorities in consulting with stakeholders and in effective planning, improved project design, and implementation.

The proposed training program aims to introduce participants to the different tools for assessing environmental and social impacts of projects, deepen their understanding and practical application of those tools, and improve their environmental and social assessment skills.

In cooperation with development partners such as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, PHILCESS has technical expertise in the areas of environment and social safeguards. The UP-NEC, the research and extension arm of the UP College of Engineering, was identified as the institution to house PHILCESS.

The exact dates of the training on Environmental Assessment (EA) and EA Tools and Project Supervision: Environmental and Social Management will be announced soon.
