As of May 31, a total of 29,136 Indian community entrepreneurs have received RM458 million in financing under Malaysia’s Indian Community Entrepreneur Development Scheme (SPUMI), managed by TEKUN Nasional. This initiative, launched in 2008, has received RM421.5 million in allocations to date. For 2024 alone, 666 individuals have been financed with RM18 million, and the SPUMI Goes Big programme has approved 51 applicants with a total of RM2.5 million in financing.
At a recent cheque disbursement ceremony at TEKUN Nasional headquarters, Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk R. Ramanan highlighted the success of SPUMI and SPUMI Goes Big. Since its launch on April 3, SPUMI Goes Big has received 81 applications amounting to RM7.2 million, with 51 approvals and 27 applications pending. Ramanan urged recipients to repay their financing on time to ensure the scheme continues to support other entrepreneurs.
The ministry remains focused on empowering the Indian community’s economic initiatives, which are vital for Malaysia’s economic growth. Present at the event were TEKUN Nasional chairman Datuk Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid and CEO Datuk Adam Abd Ghani, who emphasized the importance of these programs in fostering entrepreneurial development within the community.
