ADFIAP 42nd annual meeting in Muscat a big success

Over 200 attendees were at hand at the opening of the 42nd ADFIAP Annual Meeting in Muscat, Oman which was hosted by the Oman Development Bank (ODB). The event, held on February 20-23, 2019 at the Sheraton Hotel Oman with the theme, “DFIs’ Role in National Development”, was attended by ADFIAP members, international partners, local delegates, and distinguished guests from the Omani government and ministries.

ODB Chairman, Abdulsalam Bin Nasser bin Abdullah Al Kharusi welcomed the delegates and guests, among them was His Excellency, Sheikh Al Fadhl bin Mohammed Al Harthy, Secretary General of Council of Ministers of Oman. ADFIAP Chairman, Mr. Phub Dorji, Chief Executive Officer, Bhutan Development Bank Ltd., made the opening remarks while Dr. Dhafir bin Awadh Al-Shanfari, Chief Executive Officer of the Omani Authority for Partnership for Development keynoted the opening session.

One of the highlights of the various meetings held was the conference proper where various topics that revolved around the theme were discussed and dissected in four different sessions, namely, “DFIs and Entrepreneurship Development” (Session 1); “DFIs and Infrastructure Development” (Session 2); “DFIs and Technology Development” (Session 3); and “DFIs and Climate Action” (Session 4).

The speakers/panelists who shared their insights were the following: Session 1 – Tn Syed Alwi bin Mohamed Sultan, Managing Director/CEO of Agrobank Malaysia; Ms. Nisha Jayaraman, Senior Counselor of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), CII – Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Center; Datuk Mohd Zamree Mohd Ishak, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Credit Guarantee Corporation Malaysia Berhad; Mr. Aria Putera Ismail, Chief Executive Office of SME Development Bank Malaysia Berhad; and Sheikh Salah Hilal Al Mawali, Chief Executive Officer of the SME Fund, Oman. The session was chaired by Ms. Tanja Havemann, co-founder and director of Clarmondial in Switzerland.

Session 2 – Mr. Debasish Mallick, Deputy Managing Director of Export-Import Bank of India; Mr. Ivan A. Varenitsa, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of the Development Bank of the Republic of Belarus; Mrs. Emma Sri Martini, President/Director of PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (PERSERO); Mr. Muneer Al-Muneeri, Chief Executive Officer and Mr. Qaisar M. Zaman, Chief Investment Officer of Rakiza, Oman’s infrastructure fund. The session was chaired by Mr. Mominul Islam, Managing Director and CEO of IPDC Finance Ltd.

Session 3 – Mr. Khalid Alsafi Al Haribi, Managing Director of Impact Integrated; Ms. Fumiyo Harada, General Manager, International Strategy & Coordination Department, Development Bank of Japan, Inc.; Mr. Lakshman Silva, Director/Chief Executive Officer of DFCC Bank Sri Lanka; Mr. Sergey Vasiliev, Deputy Chairman of Vnesheconombank; and Dr. Harsh Kumar Bhanwala, Chairman, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) of India. The session was chaired by Madam Sharifa Al Barami, Co-founder of MarkeetEx, an e-commerce marketplace.

Session 4 – Dr. Laura Altinger, Senior Advisor (Climate Change), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific; Mr. Rolando B. Victoria, President and CEO, ASKI Group of Companies; Mr. Laurent Biddiscombe, Head of Financial Institutions Group, Agence Francaise de Developpement; Ms. Cecilia Borromeo, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Development Bank of the Philippines and Ms. Matautia Rula Levi, Chief Executive Officer of the Samoa Housing Corporation.

Other highlights of the annual meeting included the 89th ADFIAP Board of Directors Meeting; the 23rd Ordinary Meeting of the General Assembly; the Delegate-Meets-Delegate (D-m-D) Session; the Welcome Dinner and Awards Night, the Closing Dinner; and the Fellowship Day Tour.

The ADFIAP annual meeting is being held in different cities around the region and serves as a platform for ADFIAP members and partners to learn from each other and network among themselves on matters relevant to development banking and finance.
