ADFIAP, represented by its Secretary General and Head of its consulting arm, AC, Mr. Octavio B. Peralta and Ms. Corazon D. Conde, respectively, attended the official launch of the SMART Myanmar 2.0 project in the capital city Yangon on January 19, 2016. The event, attended by over 150 participants and guests, was graced by the EU Delegation Ambassador, Mr. Roland Kobia.
ADFIAP is part of a consortium of implementing partner-institutions of this project called, “SMEs for Environmental Accountability, Responsibility and Transparency Myanmar” or SMART Myanmar, for short. The consortium, led by sequa gGmbH of Germany, also includes the Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association (MGMA), Made-By and AVE. Associate partner of project is Germany’s GIZ.
Aside from the official project launch, the ADFIAP mission to Myanmar from January 19-22, 2013 also afforded ADFIAP to meet with consortium partners to: (a) draw up the project work plans (b) discuss the budget for 2016 and (c) hold a project steering committee meeting. The timing also provided ADFIAP the opportunity to conduct, as part of its role in the project, an advocacy campaign and awareness briefing for Central Bank officials and Myanmar Banks Association (MBA) on sustainable consumption and production (SCP) principles and practices and its relevance to banks and financial institutions.
The SMART Myanmar 2, a 4-year project, funded by a grant from the European Commission under its SWITCH-Asia Programme https://ec.europa.eu/europeaid/where/asia/regional-cooperation/environment/switch_en.htm, specifically aims to improve production and increase consumption of sustainably produced garment from Myanmar through up-scaling and improving on best practice mechanisms developed and implemented during SMART Myanmar 1 project.
ADFIAP’s main role is to upscale training programs and workshops on green finance conducted during SMART Myanmar 1 project; provide training to Myanmar banks and awareness briefings to the Central Bank on green finance and development and marketing of green finance products; provide training to SMEs on how to approach banks for loans; and organize public private dialogue on incentive schemes for SMEs to foster green investments. ADFIAP hopes that the experience gained from the project can be shared to its member-development finance institutions (DFIs) in the region.
