ADFIAP’s IDF holds certificate course for SME bankers

SMEBankersProgram2015 copyADFIAP’s Asia-Pacific Institute of Development Finance (IDF) held the “SME Bankers Program” (SBP) on November 16-27, 2015 at the AIM Conference Center Manila (ACCM), Philippines. The program was attended by five (5) participants from ADFIAP members in Palau and Sri Lanka, who upon course completion, received the credential, ‘Certified SME Banking Specialist’.

The SBP is a certificate course under the ADFIAP Career Credentialing Program (ACCP), a process of accrediting and recognizing professional competence of development bankers. The main objective of the program is to equip officers of ADFIAP members dealing with SMEs with the important concepts, knowledge and skills in planning and managing investments in SMEs. The program covers the following topics: concept of development finance and place of SME in the process of economic development; the role of SME in supplying the missing ingredients for; characteristics of SME as development projects; planning and management of SME, including major aspects in designing SME investments; roles of development financing institution in the management of SME; loan security: asset-based collateral approach; identifying business risks; guidelines for credit analysis for investment loans; use of financial ratios for credit analysis; financial analysis for SME; financial management system for SME; proforma income statement and proforma cash flow; and determining loan repayments, including grace periods.

Apart from the classroom lectures, the participants also visited the Center for Agriculture and Rural Development—Mutually Reinforcing Institutions, https://www.cardmri.com, (CARD-MRI), a and Esquire Financing Inc. https://esquire.com.ph, (EFI), to learn first hand the experiences of both institutions in dealing with their SME clients. CARD-MRI is the innovative leader in microfinance industry in the country while EFI is a company that focuses on the growing needs of SMEs for quick, non-collateral business loans.

The resource persons of the program were Dr. Alberto Pena, Associate Director of the International Studies & Programs of the Illinois State University, USA; and Mr. Federico Ortiz III, a seasoned commercial and investment banker and ADFIAP consultant.
