IDF holds 6th STP on MSME Financing & Development in Malaysia

ADFIAP’s Institute of Development Finance (IDF), in cooperation with the SME Bank of Malaysia (SME Bank), conducted a Study Tour Program (STP) on Micro, Small & Medium-Scale Enterprise (MSME) Financing and Development on May 25-31, 2010 in Kuala Lumpur, Sunway-Damansara and Malacca in Malaysia. The program was attended by 7 senior officers of ADFIAP member-institutions from Bangladesh, India, Palau and Thailand.

This program is one of kind as it combined principles and concepts with practical application from the perspectives of the regulatory bodies to operational aspects in the MSME sector. It deepened the participants’ knowledge in the Malaysian way of SME financing and development through institutional visits, exposing them the experiences and best practices of policy-making bodies as well as various key players in the financing of the SME sector. The institutional visits included the Bank Negara Mlaysia (Central Bank of Malaysia), SME Corporation of Malaysia, Credit Guarantee Corporation of Malaysia, Bank Rakyat and SME Bank of Malaysia. The participants also visited SME projects funded the SME Bank in Sunway-Damansara and Malacca.

The program also provided a platform for the participants to exchange views and ideas to have a better appreciation of the significant role that financial institutions play in the promotion of MSME finance in their respective countries.

ADFIAP was represented by its Deputy Secretary General and concurrently Chief Executive of the IDF, Mr. Isidro A. Sobrecarey, and Senior Executive for Programs, Ms. Sandra Honrado while SME Bank was represented by its Managing Director and Deputy Managing Director, Dato’ Azmi bin Abdullah and Datuk Radzif Mhd. Bin Yunus, respectively. The event was also graced by the presence of the Council Members of the Association of DFIs in Malaysia (ADFIM).

SME Bank’s Managing Director,Dato’ Azmi bin Abdullah opened the program with his remarks and briefing on SME Banks financial programs for the development of the SME sector in Malaysia. This was followed by Mr. Sobrecarey’s presentation on the role of Development of Financial Institutions.
