ADFIAP’s Institute of Development Finance (IDF) conducted the 5-day “International Exposure cum Study Visit on Microfinance Initiatives and Trends in China” (IDF’s14th Study Tour Program on MSMEs) from April 22-26, 2013 in Beijing and Tianjin, China in cooperation with the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges (CICETE), a development cooperation agency under the Ministry of Commerce in charge of UNDP and UNIDO projects and the China Association of Microfinance (CAM), the only national member-based association in microfinance sector in China. Eight (8) participants from ADFIAP-member banks in Oman and Malaysia participated in the program.
The program was aimed at enhancing the participants’ knowledge and understanding of micro, small and medium-scale enterprise (MSME) financing and development, especially with regard to the financial policies implemented and initiatives taken up in China as well as the inclusive financial sector development trends in the country. The course was structured to give a more relevant and practical perspective on MSME financing and development through visits to policy and regulatory agencies such as the People’s Bank of China/Central Bank of China (PBoC) and the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) and conduits of MSME funds like China Development Bank and Beijing Capital Investment and Guarantee Co., Ltd. Additionally, field visits at Huairou Village Bank and Bohai Women’s Credit Company/Bohai Incubation Services in Tianjin were organized to allow the participants to have a firsthand exposure with microfinance institutions and their clients.
The speakers on the first day briefing included Dr. Sherry Tao Kong on “Macroeconomic Development in China”; Prof. Du Xiao Shan on “Overview of Microfinance in China”; and Ms. Wang Dan on “Domestic and International Definition of Microfinance, Issues from the both the demand side and supply side in China microfinance market and milestones of microfinance in China.” ADFIAP was represented by Ms. Sandra C. Honrado, Senior Executive on Programs. CICETE’s Deputy Director-General, Ms. Wang Weili and CAM’s Secretary General, Mr. Bai Cheng Yu, formally welcomed the participants.
